English language learner programming

The Rochester City School District offers a variety of program offerings for English Language Learners including newcomer programs and three bilingual education models for ELLs with Spanish as a home language. English as a new language (enl) services

English as a New Language (ENL), is formerly known as English as a Second Language (ESL) and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Certified ENL/ESOL teachers offer support in English language development through academic subjects. Cross-cultural understanding is another important goal of all ENL instruction.

Students develop English skills through specialized instruction by ENL teachers in collaboration with the rest of their educational program, either as a separate class (stand-alone) or within the classroom (integrated). ENL services are provided to all English Language Learners in every school in the Rochester City School District. ENL services are an integral component of the Bilingual and LEAP programs at all grade levels, K-12. See units of study.

After ELLs who have reached the Commanding level, they will continue to receive ENL services and testing accommodations for up to 2 years.
