A cross-functional team has been working to determine K-6 minutes for the 22-23 SY. Given the reduced time in content minutes, the department scheduling guidance was adjusted to ensure the following CR Part 154 mandates:
Home Language Arts Instruction
English Language Arts Instruction
1-2 content areas depending on proficiency
In addition, we are moving towards a more intentional opportunity to develop the second language through oral language development and a focus on metalinguistic awareness and cross-linguistic transfer. You will note a 40 minute ELA block in your K-2 classrooms where ENL teachers can support building oral language, teaching cognates and tiered vocabulary, and some teaching of reading and writing through whole language instruction in the second language (English phonics will not be used in K-2; unless the student is on level J).
