What is Social Emotional Learning?

Social emotional learning (SEL) is a methodology that helps students of all ages to better comprehend their emotions, to feel those emotions fully, and demonstrate empathy for others. These learned behaviors are then used to help students make positive, responsible decisions; create frameworks to achieve their goals, and build positive relationships with others.

Goals of Social Emotional Learning:

Goals for SEL for New York State students: These three goals have been developed based

on five social emotional competencies identified by the Collaborative for Academic,

Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) and recognize the developmental nature of social

emotional skills.

1. Develop self-awareness and self-management skills essential to success in school

and in life.

2. Use social awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive

relationships.

3. Demonstrate ethical decision-making skills and responsible behaviors in personal,

school, and community contexts.
