Note: If your student already uses a particular symbol, replace the generic image in the visuals with your student’s specific image. With appropriate permissions, you may take pictures of the student or with their support persons within the student’s own routine. Modify images as needed to reflect students of similar age if photos of the student themselves are not used.

Use positive supports regularly, and often!

Yes/Open and No/Closed Supports:
Please remember these key things when considering use of yes/open and no/closed visual supports:
Include more positive visual supports than no or closed visual supports in a space (say yes more than no).
Don't overwhelm with the number of visual supports in a space whether they are affirming or directive.
Visual supports must be explicitly taught before they can be followed and understood.
