Note: If your student already uses a particular symbol, replace the generic image in the visuals with your student’s specific image. With appropriate permissions, you may take pictures of the student or with their support persons within the student’s own routine. Modify images as needed to reflect students of similar age if photos of the student themselves are not used. Note that a choice board and a self-monitoring board may be used with one or a few learners rather than a whole class, but can be used within the Tier 1 setting of the classroom.
Choice Boards and Self-Monitoring (Token) Boards:
Many students are reinforced or can self-monitor without external reminders or reinforcement, but some students may benefit from a visual system to support them in self monitoring or a visual, tangible system of reinforcement such as a token board system - always talk with your school team, caregivers and your learner about the benefits or potential challenges of introducing a new strategy/intervention to your learner.
As we move toward more neurodiversity affirming practices together, please know that traditional methods of using token boards are shifting. Token boards can be an effective strategy with learners who are ready to self-monitor or who need a tangible system of reinforcement (decision made as a team) but whole class reinforcement systems must be used with caution. The practice of providing specific and positive feedback frequently and any constructive feedback privately and with less frequency should be considered. One example of token board that could be used for self monitoring is below. Use of a token board for self-monitoring is an example of how an individiualized support (Tier 2) an be delivered within a Tier 1 context.
