Mental Health Awareness Month
By Mara Ressler
1 May 2024
Mental Health Month raises awareness of trauma and the impact it can have on the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of children, families, and communities. Mental Health Month was established in 1949 to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans' lives, and to celebrate recovery from mental illness. Mental health is essential for a person's overall health. Prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can recover from mental disorders and live full and productive lives.
Over the past 20 years, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and others within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and across the Federal Government, the public health community, and the general public have made efforts to increase the importance of understanding both prevention and treatment of mental health problems. These efforts have significantly improved the outlook for those affected by mental illnesses.
Successful efforts that have raised awareness about the importance of mental health and promoted acceptance, support, prevention and recovery from these mental health conditions include:
The Affordable Care Act expands health insurance coverage to approximately 30 million Americans by 2016, and an estimated 11 million of these newly eligible beneficiaries will have substance abuse and/or mental health service needs.
The Community Mental Health Services Block Grant provides financial assistance to states and territories to carry out state plans to offer comprehensive community-based mental health services and evidence-based practices to adults with serious mental illnesses and children with serious emotional disturbances.
Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 eliminates the practice of unequal health treatment and improves access to much needed mental health and substance use disorder treatment services through more equitable insurance coverage.
The Garrett Lee Smith State/Tribal Suicide Prevention Program facilitates coordination across government agencies and the private sector in the development, implementation, and evaluation of youth suicide prevention and early intervention plans among youth-serving institutions, such as schools, educational institutions, juvenile justice systems, substance abuse programs, primary care, mental health programs, foster care systems, and other organizations.

Debate me
The new Taylor Swift album “The tortured poets department”
It was a double album with 15 new songs “The tortured poets department: The anthology” Overall it is not good. Some people will disagree with me. The songs sound the same and are very interesting. It talks a lot about drugs. Some lyrics are so bad and don’t make sense. There is only one good song. “ Florida !!!” ft. Florence and The Machine.
App for That

Have you ever wanted to end a phone call with someone annoying or awkward? Fake-An-Excuse is the perfect app for you. This app will play fake sounds during an unwelcome phone call, allowing you an excuse to hang up. FUN FACT
Neil Armstrong’s hair was sold for $3,000
In 2004 the barbershop Marx’s that Neil Armstrong used to frequent collected his hair after a trim and sold it for $3,000. The buyer was John Reznikoff, a collector listed by the Guinness World Records as having the largest collection of hair from historical celebrities. After Armstrong threatened to sue the barbershop owner, Reznikoff said he would donate the money to charity but would not return the hair.

Unsung Hero
While most heroes in the world wear scrubs, a badge, or a fire helmet, there is one hero here at RHS who wears running shoes and her name is Ms. Toth. Ms. Toth teaches math here at RHS and she teaches in a way that she brings the numbers to life and helps students understand how to solve any equation in a snap. Ms. Toth also tells all of her students where to get the best deal on anything. She tells us where to get gas, where the free coffee is and so much more.
Low-key fire
Acai bowls are so good. I’ve only had them a few times but it’s fire. I recommend an acai bowl to everyone.
Acai bowls are so refreshing and they’re perfect for a super hot summery day.
You can put so many different toppings on it like granola, chocolate chips, fruit, etc.
I went to the Kwench Cafe in Kent to get one and it was $12 so if there’s a different place to get one for cheaper then I’d recommend doing that.
The Over/Under
There are so many things that are underrated. One of the biggest things that is underrated is Ice. Ice is so good. It's a good way to get water and to snack on it. Nuggets ice is the best ice ever. Something about it makes it so good. It's also a quick way to get a sip of cold water.

Therese McBride
She graduated from the University of Akron where her major was Secondary Education. Before she transferred to Akron, she spent one semester as an Engineering major and one semester as a Nursing major.
Even after she decided to go into teaching, she was torn as to which subject to teach. She chose English because she felt that the skills taught in ELA (reading, writing, critical thinking) could be useful to all of her students, even the ones who don't love reading like she does.
She loves when she and the students are reading a text together and finding interesting/important ideas there - even in texts she’s read dozens of times now, she’s always discovering and learning something new. She also enjoys teaching poetry, which she never expected. Poetry was never a strong point for her until she had to figure out how to teach it and help her students get something out of it - now it's one of her favorites.
“I plead the fifth.” Mrs. McBride states after being asked her favorite grade level.
This is her 10th year teaching at Ravenna High School

The RHT's own Amelia Fuller wrote a poem titled "The Dance of Our Lives" about dancers, but with a possible hidden meaning. After that is Clare Johnston's "Outside the Window" about things found when looking outside. Followed by Hunter Marsh's "Basketball" poem about a favorite RHS sport.
Closing the collection is Conner McKinney's "The Fourteenth Moment" poem/prose piece that follows thoughts in a very particular situation from moment to moment. And the collection ends with an untitled piece by Hayley Wilson about a person very near and dear.
