By Kora Scalia - Halloween is known as the year when kids dress up and go Trick or Treating to get candy, but Halloween has a deeper meaning. Halloween originated from the ancient Celt festival of Samhain. People would wear costumes and light bonfires to ward off ghosts.
In the 8th century Pope Gregory III designed November 1 to be All Saints' Day. He uses traditions from the Celt festival of Samhain. The evening before November 1 was called All Hallows' Eve and before long Hallows' Eve turned into Halloween. As time went on, new traditions for Halloween were added like carving pumpkins, going Trick or Treating, dressing up in costumes, and fun festivals.
Halloween came to America about the 19th century as people traveled to America and brought their traditions with them. Halloween was limited in the 13 original colonies because of England's Potente Belief systems.
The celebration of Halloween was more popular in Maryland and the southern colonies. As Europeans came to the colonies, the American version of Halloween started. People would dance, sing and even tell ghost stories.
In the middle of the 19th century, autumn festivals started for places that don't celebrate Halloween in the colonies.
In the later years of the 19th century Irish immigrants came to America.
They brought traditions and even the Great Irish Potato Famine which helped fuel the popularity of Halloween in the colonies.
