Rat Terrier Rescue Canada Inc.
"Rescue One Til There Are None"
To what specific purposes are the donated funds allocated?
Vetting
Upon arrival in the southern states, our dogs are placed in foster homes for assessment to determine their specific veterinary care requirements. The majority require current vaccinations, spaying, or neutering, while many also necessitate heartworm treatment, and some may require surgery to address various ailments.
Older dogs may require increased care, but we cannot turn away neglected or senior animals.
All of them deserve the opportunity for a loving home but vetting is costly.
Transport
Upon completion of essential veterinary care, encompassing vaccinations and other required treatments, we hire a broker to arrange the safe transportation of the dogs from Louisiana, Texas, or Alabama to Michigan, prioritizing their well-being throughout the journey across the US border.
The safety and reliability of the drivers are our primary concerns for their subsequent transit across the border into Canada.
We pre-arrange for Ontario-based drivers to be stationed at the Canada border, prepared to transport the dogs across Ontario, including numerous designated drop-off locations along their route.
Vet Inspection
In addition to the required paperwork demonstrating the dogs' health and vaccination status for entry into Canada, we also engage with Canadian border services veterinarians to inspect our documentation and the animals themselves, ensuring compliance with all regulations before their release into the country, which is another added cost.
Taxes
Before the dogs are actually released in Ontario and pass all the inspections required the duty has to be paid. Even dogs are taxed unfortunaley so yet another expense we have to endure.
Many of our dogs are called throwaways, because no one wants them, except us. Some had owners who decided that they wanted a younger dog, or a different colour, or non shedding coat or smaller/bigger or the dog got pregnant by accident because they were not spayed or neutered. Moms get dumped and forgotten, trying to survive on the streets with no food or shelter and give birth wherever they can hide.
Our Rat Terriers and terrier mixes often come from puppy mill busts, owner surrenders and euthanasia lists from shelters. They are the strays, the forgotten and the abandoned who find themselves in high kill shelters in the southern states. We have a very dedicated team of dog loving people who volunteer endless amounts of hours trying to save lives, one dog at a time.
We don't just save puppies - we take young, middle-aged and older dogs too. We save those injured or heartworm positive or ones that require surgery to live a full life. Sometimes treatments are costly but through donations we can get the medical needs attended to.
Rat Terrier Rescue Canada is registered Canadian charitable organization (#80288 7620 RR0001) and is run solely by volunteers. We receive no funding other than through adoption fees, donations and fundraising activities.
All funds are used solely for the rescue, rehabilitation, transport and placement of our rescued Rat Terriers.
