The students’ schedules for each succeeding school year are developed between January and April. Counselors meet with their students to plan an appropriate program of study. Parents of students in the Junior Class are scheduled to meet with their child’s counselor individually. Course selections will be made available for parental review through the online Education Portal. Tentative student schedules are available on portals during the first week in July.
Juniors Parents invited January – March 2023
Sophomores January – February 2023
Freshmen January – February 2023
8th Graders January – February 2023
The course selection process is a collaborative effort between teachers, students, counselors, and parents.
The course selection process includes:
gathering data and teacher observations of students
making decisions, in consultation with fellow grade and subject area teachers and subject supervisors, about teacher recommendation based on data and observation
communicating teacher recommendations through the parent portal
securing student elective choices
communicating student choices to parents through the parent portal
We begin with thoughtful and data informed teacher recommendations, welcome input from students and parents, and allow for waiver of placement from parents (when appropriate pre-requisites have been met). Be mindful of deadlines to assist our effort to best meet your child’s academic needs and elective interests.
The master schedule is designed based on the information gathered during the course selection process, and individual student schedules are delivered over the summer.
Waiver of Placement Form (CLICK ON LINK FOR FORM)
After discussing the rationale for placement with your student’s counselor, a parent may request a “waiver of placement” form.
The waiver of placement form asks you to:
a) acknowledge that your child’s recommendation was based on carefully considered criteria
b) accept responsibility for consequences for overriding our recommendation/placement
c) acknowledge that reversal for a waiver once enacted may not be allowed should your child struggle in the course level of your choosing
In order to make a schedule change:
A student must see a counselor to discuss the advisability and feasibility of making the change. If the student and counselor agree the change is warranted, the student must bring a signed note from a parent or guardian requesting the change.
A Schedule Change Form will then be forwarded to the subject supervisor.
The counselor reviews the request for a change with the department supervisors and teachers. If all parties feel the decision is in the best interests of the student, a Drop/Add Form is filled out with the date when the change will become official.
