English Language Learners (ELLs) who are still acquiring English proficiency bring unique educational backgrounds and valuable cultural knowledge to the school experience. Some students are close to reaching English proficiency while others are at the start of their journey toward fluency. The Ramsey English Language Learner program seeks to provide well-planned instruction that will help all ELLs meet challenging academic standards and use English accurately in their everyday life. As such, ELLs will learn by building their understanding of foundational content, phonics, vocabulary, language structures, comprehension skills, and technology in order to access grade level material in all disciplines.
Students develop basic language skills using simple vocabulary and grammar. Good pronunciation, listening skills and elementary reading and writing are introduced. American culture is also introduced in conjunction with coping skills.
Emphasis is placed on expanding grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading comprehension and guided composition. Students learn more advanced coping and study skills.
Increased vocabulary development, reading, and writing through idiomatic usage are stressed so that the students become quite accustomed to American culture in daily life and in high school.
Students learn the finer points of grammar, advanced vocabulary, reading and writing skills with an emphasis on style and form. Students are introduced to the history, literature, art and music of the United States, as well as college preparatory skills. The course also offers the opportunity to complete the components of a Profile Project as outlined in the Ramsey High School Profile Project Handbook.
