The Business Education Department offers students the opportunity to learn about the business world from numerous perspectives. Students elect courses for exposure to prospective career opportunities as well as for information and skills useful in their personal lives. Practical learning experiences, basic business literacy, and critical thinking skills are developed in the business education courses, enabling students to become successful consumers, producers and entrepreneurs. Students are kept abreast of ongoing developments in the business world through the use of state of the art technology.
This is a one-semester class that teaches the basics of accounting including debits, credits, the accounting equation and journaling of business transactions for service businesses. This is the perfect course for the student who will be pursuing a business major in college and wants a head start. The use of QuickBooks 2006 software and simulations will be integrated into this course.
A half year follow-up course to CPA I that will include the preparation of accounting statements for both service and inventory businesses. This course will primarily be taught using QuickBooks 2006 software and simulations for inventory based businesses.
The Business Management course teaches the students how to successfully identify and evaluate everyday business decisions. Topics include management styles, ethics, financial management, and overall business conduct. The class includes various pieces of technology, apps, and software as well as the fundamentals of entrepreneurship. New topics include the importance of entrepreneurs to the economy and the workforce. There is now an inclusion of infographics that summarize in writing and with various picture prompts the role of a successful manager as a leader, mentor, motivator and valuable workplace resource.
This full year class helps college preparatory students gain an understanding of marketing. The students learn four of the seven functions of marketing including selling, distribution, promotion and product service management in addition to the marketing mix, marketing concept, target marketing and more. Students are members of DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) where they have the ability to compete in various marketing related events.
*Profile Pathway Course
The second course in the two year Marketing program is a full-year challenging course for college preparatory students who wish to deepen their understanding of market research, the financing of marketing activities and the pricing of products/services on the market. This course provides “real life” applications and relies heavily on project-based learning. Students are members of DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) where they have the ability to compete in various marketing related events.
Fashion Marketing is a one semester course that provides students with the opportunity to learn and apply marketing principles to the Fashion Industry. The course covers the history of fashion as well as current industry trends, applied to marketing theory covered in Marketing I. Fashion is an ever-changing and evolving stylish industry and marketers need to have the ability to keep up in the fast-paced environment. The fashion designer relies on the marketer to promote and sell his/her designs by creating an image and a desire to purchase. Instructional strategies include daily computer/technology applications, real and/or simulated fashion experiences, and projects in the marketing functions such as those available through the DECA program of activities. Students have the opportunity to join DECA, the co-curricular marketing club, and participate in regional, state, and international competitions.
This is a one-semester course that provides students with the opportunity to learn and apply marketing principles in the field of Sports and Entertainment. The course is designed to teach sports and entertainment management skills, such as contract negotiation. Entertainment is one of the largest exports from the U.S. to the rest of the world. Areas covered include: advertising, apparel licensing, broadcast negotiations and programming, economics of the sports/ entertainment industry, endorsements, event/stadium/ arena management, facilities management, finance, global/sport, entertainment marketing, labor relations, professional/intercollegiate/high school sports management, public relations, sponsorships, sport/entertainment law, and sport/ entertainment marketing. Instructional strategies include: computer/technology applications, real and/or simulated sports/entertainment experiences, and projects in the marketing functions such as those available through the DECA program. Students who are enrolled during the fall semester have the opportunity to join DECA, the co-curricular marketing club and participate in regional, state, and international competitions.
