Smith

Schedule

  • Will follow an A/B schedule (see grade-level schedules below)

  • The biggest change is that we will hold more synchronous classes and live help. Students will need to “attend” class during set times and be held more accountable for participation in classwork.

  • Teachers will proactively communicate with students via the Schoology course update daily (on day of course) by the times of the periods in each grade level schedule.

  • Teachers will answer emails and/or hold small group/one on one conferences using videoconferencing during their publicized office hours.

Instructional Methods

  • All teachers will utilize Schoology, our district’s Learning Management System, to facilitate remote learning.

Core Subjects

  • Teachers use a variety of types of instruction: synchronous, hybrid, and asynchronous (see chart below)

    • Synchronous or live instruction via videoconferencing

    • Hybrid approach with live help and period-based assignment

    • Asynchronous with live help and daily-based assignment

  • Teachers will teach a live lesson about once a the week through the use of videoconferencing (Zoom, Google Hangouts Meet, or Schoology Conferences). Teachers should communicate this time as far in advance to students as possible. The main point of this is personal connection as well as an opportunity to do some live teaching. Teachers will take attendance and report any students not present according to school procedures.

Exploratory Classes

  • Asynchronous Learning

  • Period time on the schedule is when students can complete assignments for all exploratory classes.

  • Target is 1 assignment / due activity per week

  • Teachers will host office hours for extra help

Wellness Period

  • Takes the place of "Wellness Wednesday"

  • Components of Harvard School of Education's Making Caring Common Project will be done during this time. Students will receive email as to specifics each Wellness period

  • Student will send pictures or videos to Mrs. Wohlrab (Smith Media Specialist) of being “at play”. Students can send any fitness activity (walking the dog, playing a sport, etc.), art project, yoga, meditation, etc. Smith's weekly newsletter will have updates for student wellness.

Assessment

  • Student work will be collected via Schoology.

  • Teachers can use the assessment features of Schoology as well as other creative assessment methods.

  • Assessments will still be given but teachers have been encouraged to be “compassionate, generous, and flexible” in grading.

  • Marking period 3 closes on April 3rd.

  • Reports cards will be posted to the parent portal on April 17 as planned for Marking Period 3.

  • All statewide assessments (NJSLA) for Grades 6-8 have been canceled for 2020.

Accountability and Attendance

  • Accountability

    • The expectation is that all students are participating in instruction as designed by their teacher.

      • Attendance will be taken during live classes as students must attend these classes.

      • Assignment submission will count for attendance for hybrid/asynchronous instruction.

      • Teachers will report any issues to the attendance office and building administration for follow up. Teachers will monitor online participation and follow up with students who are not regularly participating.

  • Attendance

    • If your child is sick and cannot participate on a given day, please email miorio@ramsey.k12.nj.us or call 201-785-2313 by 10:00 AM. This will count as an official absence.
