course descriptions - Ensemble

Overview

Ensemble classes will be offered to all students. Each grade level will have their own band and chorus. Participation in chorus and band gives students the opportunity to practice 21st Century Skills such as collaboration and teamwork, creativity, and accountability. They will come to know the importance of practice for oneself and the group, and in doing so, will learn more about the aesthetic side of music and musicality. Students will also expand their appreciation, understanding, and involvement of music through performing in a large ensemble. Participation in at least two concerts each year is expected of students enrolled in the music ensemble classes.

Note - students may participate fully in both band and chorus without any conflict.

Chorus

Each chorus (Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth) at Smith School is scheduled for two full-ensemble rehearsals each week during the Exploratory period block. Students in the chorus study and perform a wide variety of music of different genres, and perform at a minimum of two public concerts each year. As students’ musical backgrounds vary greatly, the chorus program is structured in order to foster individual musical growth for all students. Students without previous choral experience are always welcome to join.

Grade 6 Band

Students in band are scheduled for two full-band rehearsals and one small-group lesson per week, all of which take place during the Exploratory time block of a student’s schedule. Lessons are grouped according to instrument and ability. Lesson content includes sequential studies in the lesson book, instrument-specific pedagogy, and the application of new skills to the selected band literature. There are three band ensembles at Smith School: Sixth Grade Band, Seventh Grade Band, and Eighth Grade Band, each of which rehearse during their own periods. Instrumentation of the 6th Grade Band is expanded with the addition of larger and more varied instruments. Students without previous instrumental experience who wish to join the band program should consult with the instructors about choosing an appropriate instrument. Extra-curricular music opportunities are also available to members of the 6th Grade Band.

Grade 7 Band, Grade 8 Band

Students in band are scheduled for two full-band rehearsals and one small-group lesson per week, all of which take place during the Exploratory time block of a student’s schedule. Lessons are grouped according to instrument and ability. Lesson content includes sequential studies in the lesson book, instrument-specific pedagogy, and the application of new skills to the selected band literature. There are three band ensembles at Smith School: Sixth Grade Band, Seventh Grade Band, and Eighth Grade Band, each of which rehearse during their own periods. Students in the 7th and 8th grade bands are eligible to audition for All-County and All-Region groups as well as advanced ensembles at Smith School.

course descriptions - Exploratory

Art 6

The 6th grade art program concentrates on color. Students learn about color theory, shading, tinting and value, while studying and completing artwork like the masters! Artistic styles, art history, and famous artists are explored. Mediums such as chalk pastels, acrylic paint, paper quilling and clay are investigated while gaining experience with critiquing art.

Music 6

The 6th Grade Music Exploratory class is designed to give students a chance to create music in a variety of ways, both traditional and non-traditional. Grounded in instruction in the elements of music (i.e. melody, harmony, rhythm, etc.) students will work together to explore various musical styles, build simple instruments, and create original compositions. Digital applications of music may also be explored.

Art 7

The 7th grade art program concentrates on understanding the “mystery” of creating the illusion of 3-dimensional objects on a 2-dimensional surface. Linear perspective street scenes, digital abstract value eye drawing, acrylic still life painting, and charcoal value drawings are created while exploring artists for each. We will use self assessment, reflection and critiquing to grow as artists!

Music 7

In the 7th Grade Music Exploratory class, students will learn about the elements of music such as rhythm, melody, harmony, and form within the context of improving their ability to read traditional musical notation and develop skills for playing the piano/keyboard. By the end of the course, students will apply their knowledge of the elements of music, notation, and keyboarding to create an original keyboard composition. The students will be encouraged to explore their creative talents, take risks, reflect, and revise their compositions in a safe and constructive environment.

Art 8

The 8th grade art program centers around the 3-dimensional form. Additive sculpture, clay relief sculpture, linoleum relief printmaking, and paper sculpture are all explored. The students will self reflect and assess their work.

Music 8

The 8th grade Digital Music Exploratory is designed to provide all students with a positive experience regardless of musical background and build upon their natural interest in music. Students will learn to interact and manipulate musical ideas through digital interfaces like “Garage Band,” and use the software to create musical compositions in a series of individual and collaborative projects. Students will increase their knowledge of the elements of music and compositional techniques while working in a self-directed and collaborative environment.
