The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test
The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) is a high school graduation requirement. All students take the test in grade 10 to evaluate their proficiency in reading and writing. If students are unsuccessful, they may retake the test the following year. If they are still unable to pass the test, they may take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC) to demonstrate their competence.
To achieve your high school diploma you'll need to complete the OSSLT with a mark of 70% of higher. Students normally write the test during their Grade 10 year and it is based on having achieved a Grade 9 English class level of proficiency.
If a student isn't' successful writing the test:
They may write it again at the next opportunity, after completing remedial activities with our literacy team.
If they are still not successful, they can enrol in the "Ontario Literacy Course", OLC4O, in their final year to complete the course and fulfill their literacy requirement.
Workshops, practice tests
The OSSLT is usually written in both semesters, with one day in November and one day in March.
