Choosing courses is one of the best things with which guidance can help. Click on one of the buttons to explore course descriptions for each grade. Course selection is done through www.myBlueprint.ca, and this document can help.
Remember to keep in mind your graduation requirements, and that you have the proper prerequisites for your courses.
Students are encouraged to consult their parents, their school counsellor, and their subject teachers before selecting subjects and choosing the level of difficulty of each subject. It is of prime importance that the program of study selected will provide them with the requirements which their future educational program will demand.
Since students have free choice in the selection of their subjects, changes will seldom be allowed once their final selection has been made. Only under exceptional circumstances and only with the permission of the Principal will students be allowed to change courses during the school year.

As outlined by the Ministry of Education in PPM167 (February 2022) students must earn a minimum of two online learning credits as part of the requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma unless they have opted out in accordance with the processes described in the memorandum. The Ministry indicates that up to one secondary school credit completed by Grade 9 students in the 2020-21 (i.e. grade 12 students in 2023-24) school year during the province-wide school closures (from April 2021 to June 2021) may be counted towards the graduation requirement.
Any student can 'Opt Out' of the Online Graduation Requirement when they do their course selections in myBlueprint in Feburary of each year. Opting Out will mean that online learning is no longer required for the student to attain their OSSD, but it does not bar them from being able to take online courses during their high school years. Here is an 'Opt Out' Guide to help with this option.
E-Learning courses are for courses that are not offered by MSS or do not fit into a student's schedule. To be approved to take an e-learning course students must be in Grade 11 or 12 and not have failed any courses. It is recommended that e-learning students have all previous final grades above 65%. More information is available here.
RDSB also provides this document: Getting Started with e-Learning.
The Dual Credit Program provides secondary school students with the opportunity to earn a secondary school credit and a Cambrian College credit simultaneously. Please contact your school’s Guidance department for further information, or click here for more information.
ACADEMIC COURSES (D) cover essential concepts plus enrichment activities. While course work exposes students to both theory and practical applications, there is greater emphasis on Theory as a basis for future learning and problem solving.
APPLIED COURSES (P) focus on essential concepts. While course work exposes students to both theories and practical applications, the emphasis is on Practical, familiar real-life situations and “hands-on” applications.
DE-STREAMED (W) some Grade 9 courses have been combined between Academic and Applied to help facilitate course selection for Grade 8's and prepare students to then choose either the Academic or the Applied pathway in Grade 10.
LOCALLY DEVELOPED COURSES (L) may be offered for grade 9 and 10 students who have experienced difficulties in English, Mathematics and Science. They allow the student to obtain sufficient background and skill development, to prepare them for future courses in the subject area.
OPEN (O) level courses are available to all students.
UNIVERSITY LEVEL COURSES(U) are available in grades 11 and 12 for students who plan to apply to university and some college programs.
UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE COURSES (M) are available in grades 11 and 12 for students who plan to apply to university and college programs.
COLLEGE COURSES (C) are available for students who plan to apply to college. Please note that some college programs require M or U level courses.
WORKPLACE COURSES (E) are available for students who plan to enter the world or work after completing secondary school. Grade 11 and 12 workplace students are encouraged to opt for co-operative education.
PREREQUISITE COURSES are deemed essential for the successful understanding and completion of a subsequent course. Many grade 11 and 12 courses have prerequisites as a requirement or enrolment. Parents and students are advised to consult prerequisites as established by the Ministry of Education when planning education and career goals.
