Ready to start your 2nd year at MSS? Here's all the information you'll need!
As students move into Grade 10, their choice of pathway will affect prerequisites for their choice of pathway in Grade 11. Choose your pathway carefully to ensure the proper courses are available for post-secondary plans.
Compulsory Courses in Grade 10: English, Mathematics, Science, History, Civics/Careers**
**NOTE: Civics and Careers is often taken in either Grade 10 or Grade 11. Students sometimes benefit from taking this course in Grade 11 when they have more ideas for their future career and are closer in age to vote. It is still recommended as a grade 10 course for students who already have a career in mind, or for students considering a Co-op placement before their grade 12 year.
Applied: focus on core concepts. While course work exposes students to both theories and practical applications, the emphasis is on PRACTICAL, familiar real-life situations and “hands-on” applications. These courses generally lead towards the College pathway in Grades 11 & 12.
Academic: cover core concepts plus enrichment activities. While course work exposes students to both theory and practical applications, there is greater emphasis on THEORY as a basis for future learning and problem solving. These courses generally lead towards the University pathway in Grades 11 & 12.
Locally Developed Courses: may be offered for grade 9 and 10 students who have experienced difficulties in English, Mathematics and Science. They allow the student to obtain sufficient background and skill development, to prepare them for future courses in the subject area.
Open Courses: available to all students.
NOTE: Full course descriptions are available through www.myBlueprint.ca, or by contacting the department directly.
