Tracery Rainbow - Solar Spectrum Prisms (2008)

by Peter Erskine and Kate Diamond

DESCRIPTION:   array of exterior building-mounted painted water-cut aluminum tracery panels (by Diamond), and 14 approx. 12-inch by 12-inch laser-cut flat prisms (by Erskine)

This unusual installation of Erskine's flat prisms with Diamond's stenciled panels is both an interior and exterior installation designed as "solar powered art" that takes artistic advantage of the rotunda's western exposure.
The band of prisms mounted into the upper rotunda windows produces a rainbow of light throughout the library's reading area as well as through Diamond's panels on the rotunda exterior, visible from the street.  Diamond's painted tracery panels provide a striking embellishment to both the reading room's semi-circular windows and the rotunda's two-story façade, which is fronted at street level by a sloped fountain - a City of Fontana trademark.
