Jacob's Ladder (1986-1987)

DESCRIPTION:  approx. 23-foot high sculptural installation of a 17.5-foot high by 4-foot by 3-foot cast bronze sculpture of two merchant marines during a rescue at sea, mounted on 5-foot high by 5-foot diameter circular concrete base and surrounded by a 16-foot diameter pool with p.m. lighting

This sculpture depicts two merchant marines making a rescue at sea and climbing a “Jacob’s Ladder,” symbolizing the dedication and sacrifices of American merchant marines.  It is the centerpiece of the American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial.  
Jasper D’Ambrosi, a local sculptor from Wilmington, California, designed this centerpiece but died in 1986 before completing the final model.  His sons Marc D’Ambrosi and Michael D’Ambrosi completed the sculpture’s model, casting, and installation in 1987.
