Evidence Wall (1997

Michael Davis

DESCRIPTION:  exterior and interior sculptural installation of a freestanding etched glass portal, etched granite pavement, and glass-encased collections of historic and contemporary evidence:
  • freestanding etched glass entrance portal with an image of the earlier 1940s station that is cast onto the granite entrance pathway
  • granite entrance pathway etched with images of giant fingerprints
  • individual collections of objects representing physical evidence, mounted in 56 glass blocks and incorporated into a 12-foot high by 24-foot wide curved translucent glass-block wall

In collaboration with the station architect, Michael Davis incorporated individual historic and contemporary evidence collections into the lobby's glass block wall, creating an unusual collection of evidence "vignettes."
Artist's statement:  "The projected shadow image of the old community station marks the passage of time and creates a unique identity and signature entry for the station.  An etched, bilingual text voice wall, contextualizes the entrance wall. Once inside the lobby, an interior glass block wall containing 56 glass blocks of evidence recreates and references some of Hollywood's most notorious crimes, both fictitious and historic. The Los Angeles police department's Scientific Investigation Division was engaged throughout the development of this project, consulting on such areas as accuracy, forensics and community liaison."  - Michael Davis
