Maths and Basic Facts
Maths is everywhere and it that can be used to build your child's maths knowledge. Some examples are: skip counting in 5s to see how many minutes until an event using an analogue clock or skip counting in 2s as you walk down the road . You could do this with even numbers on one side and odd numbers on the other side! Telling the time and discussing how many days/weeks until events using a calendar is a great mathematical learning experience. It is surprising how many children cannot tell us what the full date is in the morning! Reading signs, including visual language such as traffic signs and names of geometrical shapes e.g. Give Way signs are triangles and Stop signs are hexagons. Round prices up at the supermarket to whole dollar amounts and add up the total as you go, giving change using play money, or giving pocket money in coins so the children have to skip count it either in 10s or 20s or adding 10 + 20 etc. Knowing how much change to give from a given amount could be a challenge for those who are ready for that.
