The Extragalactic Distance Scale


These days, Cepheids, the Tip of the Red Giant Branch, and Supernovae are most often associated with distance scale measurements.  But the Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function has a unique role in building the Distance Ladder:  it is one of the few methods that works in both Population I and Population II systems. 

Post-AGB stars in old stellar systems also show great potential for ultra-precision distance measurements in the nearby universe.
