Planetary Nebulae and Post-AGB Stars

The Post-AGB phase of stellar evolution is probably the least understood phase of stellar evolution.  Even in the age of Gaia, the distances to most Milky Way PNe have extraordinary large uncertainties, and the identification of naked PAGB stars is difficult.  Yet if properly used, these objects can be extremely precise standard candles and yield unique insights into the chemical evolution of the Milky Way and of nearby galaxies.
