Welcome to the Faculty of Science! Every year, we happily welcome both full-time students and research interns from various countries with open arms. We want everyone to meet each other and feel like home in Thailand.
The one-day trip around Koh Yo, Songkhla was to show students how people lived in Southern Thailand. Our first stop was the Southern Thai Folklore Museum, where we explored the region’s rich traditions, arts, culture, and daily life. We also learned about Thailand’s treasured trees, such as coconuts, and saw the ingenious wooden tools once used for grating them.
Next, we paid a visit to Uncle Samran's Orchard, where we were greeted with refreshing Pandan water. There were plenty of mangosteens, durians, jackfruits, and dragon fruits, especially, Cempedak, a tropical fruit similar to jackfruit but smaller and sweeter. Cempedak tasting became the most interesting part of the day. Mr. Samran also showed how to make a fruit basket out of coconut leaves to keep bugs and sunlight away from the fruits.
At the garden, Mor-chi and Kanom Jaak, two local desserts, were made and served. Mor-chi is thought to have come from the Japanese word Mochi and been brought to Thailand when Japanese troops arrived in Songkhla during World War II. Before leaving Koh Yo, all participants also enjoyed Khao Man Gang Gai, a signature chicken rice dish from Songkhla.
Knowing how far away from home our students are, our hope for Home@Science is that all new students will feel at home in the Faculty of Science!
