Critical Thinking
PROJECTS ‣ Trends, Networks and Critical Thinking in the 21st Century ‣ Critical Thinking
Chapter 3:
A Critical Thinker
Do you weigh things before taking action?
What are your contributions in maintaining a healthy and green environment?
How can a critical thinker like you help in sustaining a better world?
HOW DOES IT
HAPPEN?
HAPPEN?
Humans can live and survive on
Earth because of the heat that we
receive from the Sun. Some of the
radiation coming from the Sun
bounces back to space but a small
portion is trapped by gases that
make up our atmosphere.
CLIMATE
CHANGE
CHANGE
Climate change refers to a
long-term switch in
temperatures and weather.
Mankind has been the main
source of climate change,
primarily due to the
burning of fossil fuels,
which can produce heat-
trapping gases.
WHAT DOES
CLIMATE
CHANGE DO?
The effects of climate change can
range from drought, storms, heat
waves, rising sea levels, melting
glaciers and warming oceans to
direct harm to animals.
WEATHER VS
CLIMATE
Weather refers to
conditions
like rain, temperature and
wind over hours to days.
Climate refers to average
weather conditions over a
long period of time (30+
years).
Hydro
fluorocarbon
fluorocarbon
Hydrofluorocarbon (HFCs) is an organic compound composed of three (3) elements: hydrogen, fluorine, and carbon. Used most commonly in refrigeration and air conditioning.
Carbon
A chemical element with the symbol C. This can be found in the Sun and other stars. The material is built up by a nuclear fusion in bigger star.
Dioxide
Contains two atoms of Oxygen (O2 )
Nitrous
Is a chemical of which contains nitrogen.
Methane
(CH₄) is a type of gas that is colorless, odorless and flammable.
Greenhouse
Is a glass building in which plants are protected from cold weather. Works by converting light energy into heat energy. Light rays from the sun enter the greenhouse, where they are absorbed by plants and objects and converted to heat.
Energy
Energy is the ability or capability of being active.
Environment
Something everyone is familiar with, where you are right now, is an environment. It is everything that makes up the surrounding of a person.
Reuse
Is to use the same material again.
Replace
Is to restore an item or being change by another material.
Recycle
To go through a series of changes.
Reduce
Is to lessen or make smaller in amount.
Climate
Is the weather condition prevailing in a certain area in general or over a long period of time.
Earth
Earth's parts: land, air, water, and life but are always changing. Some of the changes are natural and some are caused by humans. Also, this is where humanities have been living for the past centuries.
Weather
Last only for a short period of time. These are the types of weather; rainy, snowy, cloudy, sunny and windy.
Nature
Forces that control what happens in the world. The material world, especially as surrounding humankind and existing independently of human activities.
Emission
Is the production of discharge of somethings, especially gas or radiation.
Waste
An unwanted or unusable material.
Environment
Something everyone is familiar with, where you are right now, is an environment. It is everything that makes up the surrounding of a person.
Declutter
Remove unnecessary items from a overcrowded place or an untidy place.

H O W C A N Y O U H E L P ?
PLANT A TREE
Planting trees or even other plants are good ways to help reduce carbon dioxide emission.
CONSERVE WATER
Be systematic about how you use resources such as water so that nothing goes to waste.
VOLUNTEER
Take initiative by joining programs such as environmental clean ups.
EDUCATE
Be open minded when teaching other people about how to help save Mother Earth.
REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE
As a student, one of the best ways you can help is to practice the 3 R's.
USE LONG-
LASTING LIGHT
BULBS
Be judicious and switch to using light bulbs that do not take up much energy like LED lights.

Andrew Mills from Reuters (October 28, 2020) Qatar is the world's largest producer of liquified natural gas and aims to expand LNG production to 127 million ton annually by 2027. It says its gas production helps combat climate change globally because it can help the world shift from high-polluting fuels like oil and coal to renewable energies.
ORGANIZATIONS INVOLVED:
Qatar Green
Building Council
The Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC) is a membership-driven non-profit organization that provides leadership and encourages collaboration in ecologically friendly green building design and development in Qatar. The Qatar Green Building Council also aspires to assist the overall health and sustainability of the environment, the people, and Qatar's economic security for future generations.
Friends of the Environment Centre
Friends of the Environment Centre (FEC) is an environmental organization with the goal of promoting environmental awareness and developing conservation initiatives
Ministry of Education and Higher Education
The eco-school program is the largest global sustainable schools program stipulated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). A two-year commitment program that inspires individuals to care for their surroundings by allowing them to actively protect it. It improves the environment for the better in which can result in cost savings for schools in terms of electricity expenses, water use, waste collection, and other areas. Reducing waste and collecting recyclable materials will have a significant influence on both the school and the environment.
