Dear Kindergarten Families,
Happy December! Let’s embrace the spirit of the season together. We warmly welcome everyone back from the Thanksgiving break! It was wonderful to see the students return with such enthusiasm and energy. With three weeks left in this calendar school year, we have lots of learning left to do and appreciate your continued partnership in your student’s progress. So far, our students have shown remarkable dedication to their studies and have achieved great things. Whether it's mastering new concepts or collaborating with peers, we are so proud of their hard work! We encourage you to support your reader at home by focusing on sight words (and, the, to, you, can, am, go, had, etc.). We are happy to provide resources for at home practice. Accessing these sight words will allow them to decode texts on their own! Thank you for your unwavering support as we finish strong this semester. We are excited about the new units being introduced across all academic areas, which will stimulate our students' curiosity and learning. We are grateful for the strong partnership we share with you, the families. Your involvement makes a world of difference in ensuring our school thrives. As we look ahead, we anticipate more opportunities for collaboration and growth. Together, we can continue to support our students in their educational journey.
From,
Kindergarten Teachers
Rigorous Instruction
Instruction is customized, inclusive, motivating, and aligned to the Next Generation Standards. High standards are set in every classroom. Students are actively engaged in ambitious intellectual activity and developing critical thinking skills.
Units of Study
Reading: My Community Heroes– During this unit, students will learn about communities through a combination of fiction and nonfictions stories. From maps to neighbors, students will get to explore people and places that make up communities and how they contribute. We will explore roles and responsibilities and how kids can be a member, too!
Writing: Informative Writing – Students will continue to show their writing skills by learning about a new style of writing: informative. They will work on shared writing and independent pieces that “teach” the reader. We will expand our work by focusing on central ideas and key details. Our mentor texts “Places in My Community” aligns with the reading unit!
Math: Shapes All Around Us: This unit explores not only flat shapes but also their relative locations. Students will learn to name shapes such as - square, circle, triangle, rectangle - and also define their features. Further, they will be able to describe their location in comparison to another, for example above, below, next to.
Science: Needs of Plants and Animals - We will be learning about milkweed plants, caterpillars, butterflies, and what plants need to survive! This unit features a Science Walk in which we will explore the world outside our school and learn about the ecosystem.
Field Trips: Coming after the December Break!
