Arrival Procedures
Breakfast doors open at 7:30 AM at Exit Door 4 (gray doors) and close at 8 AM. Students can eat breakfast until the arrival bell at 8:15 AM and then go straight to their classrooms.
8:15 AM - All students are to line up at their assigned entrance doors ready to enter the building in an orderly conduct.
8:22 AM - All assigned entrance doors will close promptly. Students arriving late must enter through the main entrance on Union Street (yellow doors) for a late pass.
Dismissal Procedures
2:40 PM - Regular dismissal time for all grades. Make sure you or any designated person picking up your child learns the exit doors where your child will exit from at dismissal.
Children going home by bus will be escorted to the main entrance by school staff.
Children going home with a private after school program should have parental consent that an after school counselor will pick them up at dismissal. All after school counselors should pick up their students at Exit 4 (gray doors). If the private after school counselor is late picking up a child, they must go to the main entrance and announce the late child they are picking up and sign our late pick up roster.
NYC DOE regulations state that students in Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 MUST be picked up by an adult that is 18 years or older. Please make sure that the designated person picking up your child is on the BLUE CARD and has valid ID when picking up your child.
If the designated person picking up your child does not have a valid identification card and is not on the blue card, your child will not be allowed to leave the school grounds until an assigned person on the blue card is available.
Early Pick Up Procedures
If you need to take your child home early, please follow the procedures below so that when you pick up your child we can make sure it is an easy transition.
Send a signed and dated note to the teacher. The letter should have your name, child's name, your telephone number and reason for leaving early. A telephone call to the school will not be sufficient to release a child before regular dismissal.
Children will be escorted to the main office where the parent/guardian or your designee (an authorized adult listed on the BLUE CARD) must sign your child out at the main office.
Anyone picking up a child during the school day must be 18 years of age or older and must have photo identification and COVID-19 vaccination card to enter the building.
If you wish to change your designees or there is someone who is not allowed to pick up your child, please notify the school, in writing. This is an important safety measure for the protection of all our children. All designees must be listed on the BLUE CARD.
Birthday Policy
At PS 24, the last Friday of each month will be assigned as Merry Unbirthday Day to celebrate the birthdays of our students for that month.
If you would like to do something special for your child’s birthday with his/her classmates, we ask that you celebrate on Merry Unbirthday Day.
Please contact your child’s classroom teacher to make arrangements. Appropriate items are store bought items individually wrapped snacks or juice packs to be distributed at the end of the school day. Please do not send any items from home such as soda or cakes that need to be cut. We would like to celebrate your child’s special day in a very special and safe way.
Blue Emergency Cards
Each student must have two (2) BLUE CARDS completed with current contact information. They are kept on file in the Main Office and with the School Nurse. Your privacy is respected and no information is given out from this card without the Principal's knowledge and consent. The BLUE CARD is our first source of information in case of any emergency. If your child becomes ill while in school, he/she will be checked by our school nurse who will determine what course of action is required. Your child will only be released to a parent/guardian or an authorized adult as specified on the BLUE CARD. To complete the emergency contact card or update any contact information, please email our Pupil Secretary, Mon Jee at mjee@schools.nyc.gov.
Code of Conduct

Homework Policy
The purpose of homework is to reinforce lessons taught during the day and to allow our students to sharpen their skills. Homework is given on a daily basis, so be sure to check your child’s homework folder or Google Classroom for instructions. As your child progresses through the grades, the amount of homework will increase, as needed. Short and long-term assignments are given to increase your child's ability to read, write, comprehend and integrate what he/she learns into a whole learning experience. Please make sure your child completes homework and projects in a timely manner. These are important life skills that will serve him/her well as life-long learners. Your child is expected to read independently at home daily; your teacher will advise you of the appropriate level and amount of time your child should devote to reading.
School Safety
The safety of our students, teachers, staff and parents/guardians is our primary concern. Please follow the rules below so that all of us remain safe. We will enforce these rules and be vigilant about security for everyone who enters, stays and leaves our school premises.
Parents/guardians and visitors are allowed in the school building by appointment only. Visitors with an appointment stop at the Security Desk and state the nature of their business to alert their host. Visitors must show the School Safety Agent their PHOTO ID. All visitors must exit through the Main Entrance (Exit 1) and return all passes to the Security Desk.
If you do not have an appointment, you must alert the School Safety Agent the nature of your business and wait in the main lobby. Parents/Guardians will not be allowed in their child's classroom. If your child is sick or to be picked up early, please alert the School Safety Agent and a staff member will escort your child to the main office where you will sign your child out of school for the day.
Our children are our most valued treasures, and their safety and well-being are our top priority. Please cooperate with these measures for everyone's safety.
