Book of the Month

Every month, Principal Singh choose a special book to match our monthly theme. See our list of theme books chosen for this year!

January 2023

Millie has just moved to a big city, from a place more than an ocean away. She misses the garden where her family used to grow food. Then one day she has an idea: Her school has a fine flat roof, perfect for a garden. But it takes more than ideas to build a garden. It takes patience and hard work; it takes a lot of learning; and it takes a whole school- a whole community–coming together to help. From building beds and planting seeds to the first glorious harvest, here’s the story of a garden–and a girl– in bloom, and what it takes for a new place to finally taste like home.

From a lowly mixture of stone, sand, water, and cement have spring sidewalks, streets, and magnificent arenas, long bridges and massive dams. In ancient building practices, in modern engineering, and in the architecture of the future, humble concrete has played and will continue to play a mighty role in the creation of the human-made world. An eye-opening, utterly engaging, often wry look–from the ground up–at one of the marvels of the materials in the world.

December 2023

Yo-Yo Ma started to play the cello when he was only four and has shared his music with the world for many years. On April 13, 2019 Yo-Yo Ma performed at the US-Mexico border at the Rio Grande as part of his multi continent “Bach Project” tour. During his tour Yo-Yo Ma shared the message that we should build bridges rather than walls between nations.

September 2023

“Tomatoes in my Lunchbox” is our choice for September’s Book of the Month as it resonates with the stories of many of our community members - students and faculty alike. It is a story that reminds us of the transformative power of friendships in bridging our differences. Our hope is that you use this read aloud to engage students in the creation of your MindUp Classroom Community Agreement (focusing on how students want to feel as a part of your classroom community), and use it to promote an inclusive environment in the classroom.

October 2023

“I am Golden,”  is our choice for October’s Book of the Month for many reasons. First, this is such an important message for all children, regardless of their skin color. They are seen, heard, loved, special, and important. Also, the book  connects to our focus for the month -Diversity & Inclusion and Reading.
