Our goal at PS 24 is to ensure every student attends school daily. In order for your child to continue growing socially, emotionally, and academically, they need to come to school every day (unless they are sick or advised to stay home by a medial professional). Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year. Also, it could mean missing two days per month which will add up to 18 days in the school year.
Attending school, participating in class, and demonstrating understanding are all essential components of student learning and building mastery. School communities must make every effort to ensure that Every Student attends school Every Day.
A missed school day is a lost opportunity for students to learn. Teacher effectiveness is the most important factor of student success, however, chronic student absences reduce even the best teacher’s ability to provide learning opportunities. Students who attend school regularly have shown to achieve at higher levels than students who do not.
It is the goal of P.S. 24 to have our attendance at 97% by June 2024. In order to achieve this goal, an attendance committee will be created to ensure that accurate recording of attendance is done on a regularly basis (RDAL, RCUA, RWCL and RCSL), student lateness and absences are monitored (latebook, RCUA Insight Report), all stakeholders have knowledge and an understanding of the school’s attendance policy (Policy and Procedures, newsletter, memo, email blast) and use effective intervention strategies (call home, meeting with parents, home visits, certificate/rewards for 100% attendance) to improve student attendance. Â
