Transportation

You are not required to have a car on campus for this job. The America Reads & Counts program provides transportation to and from the sites via the Corsair Shuttle or LOOP bus.

Corsair Shuttle

If you choose to use the Corsair Shuttle, you will need to indicate this preference when you are selecting your shifts for the semester. Please review the Corsair Shuttle Rules and Expectations described below. Be sure to save both the Program Coordinator's email and phone number as well as the driver's number on your phone in case of an emergency.

Rules and Expectations

      • The Shuttle is expected to arrive and leave on time for pick-ups and drop-offs. It is your responsibility to be at the pick-up locations at the appropriate time.
      • The Shuttle has a pre-set schedule; they cannot wait for you if you are late (not even a minute). Make sure you know the pick-up time for your shuttle.
      • The Shuttle has a pre-determined route, they cannot pick you up or drop you off at a different locations.
      • If you are experiencing any challenges with Shuttle Transportation, contact the Program Coordinator.
      • If you eat or drink on the shuttle, discard your trash in the appropriate receptacle. Do not litter.

LOOP Bus

Some of our sites are also accessible by the LOOP bus. The LOOP bus is run by the New Bedford Port Authority and stops at the Star Store campus (715 Purchase Street). For the LOOP bus, the drop-off is near our sites, but will require walking a short distance. Be sure to save the site coordinator's phone number in case of an emergency. Riding the LOOP bus is free as long as you show the driver your UMass Pass.

Rules and Expectations

      • The bus runs on a pre-set schedule; they will not wait for you. Make sure you know the pick-up times so you are not left behind.
      • Like the shuttle, the bus has a pre-determined route, they cannot pick you up or drop you off at a different locations. Make sure you know your bus stop. Since you will need to walk to your site(s), you should have those directions with you.

Transportation FAQs

When should I be at the pick-up location to catch the shuttle or bus?

You should be at the pick-up location (on campus and at the site) 5-10 minutes before the shuttle or bus is expected to arrive.

What happens if I miss the shuttle on campus?

You will miss your shift unless you can find an alternate way to get to your site. You may drive yourself if you have a personal vehicle on campus or take the SRTA bus.

What happens if I miss the LOOP bus on campus?

Depending on the site, you may still be able to attend your shift by taking the next available LOOP bus. You may also drive yourself if you have a personal vehicle on campus. If your site does not have a flexible arrival time, then you will miss your shift.

What happens if I miss the shuttle at the site?

You will need to find an alternate way to get back to campus. You may contact our office to see if someone can pick you up, which is not a guarantee. You should familiarize yourself with other modes of transportation, including taxis, Uber/Lyft, and SRTA buses.

What happens if I miss the LOOP bus at the site?

You will need to wait for the next LOOP bus. If you miss the last LOOP bus for the day, you will need to find an alternate way to get back to campus. You should familiarize yourself with other modes of transportation, including taxis and Uber/Lyft, in case this happens.

What are the expectations if I drive myself?

If you choose to drive yourself, we accommodate reasonable travel time to get to and from your site. However, the ability to drive does not permit you to arrive late or leave early from your scheduled shift.

If I drive myself, can I change my shift times?

If you drive yourself, you may adjust your schedule if needed at the beginning of the semester. Once we start tutoring, your schedule will stay consistent for the entire semester.
