AAC is defined by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association as including “…all forms of communication (other than oral speech) that are used to express thoughts, needs, wants, and ideas”.

A collaboration of Dr. Robert Pieretti and the Applied Communication Sciences Lab (ACSL) in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (Speech Pathology and Audiology) at Sacramento State.
Their goal is to promote early literacy and language skills in multiple languages and settings.
What does the Sacramento State Literacy Connection provide?
A website with free literacy enhancement materials for families. Materials include handouts with tips for caregivers, including:
“Questions to ask Children When Reading” available in 11 languages
Techniques to elicit language and literacy growth at home in several languages
A collection of resources regarding language and literacy
Regular undergraduate and graduate student-led community service on the Sacramento area. Recent services include:
literacy enhancement training for families who participate in local Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services (SFBFS) programs
parent training each semester in literacy enhancement in both English and Spanish at SFBFS and Aspire Public Schools

Parent trainings are provided free of charge in collaboration with local organizations.
