Research and Development the most common event before TLEs, and is fantasy-based. It focuses on telling the story of a car development with the player and other scientists from the car's company being involved.
This event consists of usually 4 labs, 3 if it's a D-class car, and will have a set number of races per lab. Each and every lab gains a couple Tests. These Tests require a special coin called "Quality Checks" that are scattered around the track. They look like the picture to the side. In order to get these Quality Checks, you need to find them and run into them to get ONE Check, and you can also perform certain tricks to get more than one Quality Check.
Every Test you perform requires a special "invitation" called Proto Keys. There can be three at max in the box, and will only be refilled once you have used all three of them. The keys fully replenish after three hours.
Certain Tests may seem impossible, but its probably because it will require you to use two, three, or even more keys (Lamborghini Huracan) to complete and move on. Every race you do, a key will be used. Regardless if you win or not, or get all the Quality Checks, you will use a key every race. These keys can be replenished on the spot, with a price of just under 200 tokens.
Each Test has a specific goal you need to meet, with two secondary goals that give you more Quality Checks. If you meet the primary goal, you can keep all your Quality Checks you've earned for that race. If you fail, you may lose them (I say may because you can opt to save them for usually 45 tokens no matter the quantity.).
Each Test requires that you earn a certain number of Quality Checks before you can go to the next challenge. Some require that you need to use more than one key to complete it, even if you manage to find every Quality Check in that race (don't worry, they respawn in different places). If you manage to get all Quality Checks, you get a special reward, and they can consist of:
You can skip challenges using tokens.
AI races are at the end of each lab, but a second AI race appears in Labs 003 and 004. Those tests require you to ONLY beat the AI racer in order to pass. Now, this isn't like an EDD, you can lose and still keep your progress. If you beat an AI, it usually brings the highest credit and token reward for that Lab. If you beat the last Test in the last Lab, you will get the remaining blueprints for the vehicle, or you will get the vehicle all together, along with a decent credit and a big token reward. On average, users should have around two weeks to complete the R&D from when they chose to participate in this event.
