CO2 Cars
These are the tasks we need to complete to successfully design and create our CO2 Cars.
Refer to this list to know which step you are on and what to do next.
Complete the CO2 Car Concepts EdPuzzle. This will be posted in Google Classroom. If it is not yet posted, you can still view the video on this page.. You will need to complete the EdPuzzle once it is posted.
Take the CO2 Car Vocabulary Crossword QUIZ
Review the CO2 Car Legacy Project slide deck. Pay extra attention to the "design limitations" on slide 6. These are non-negotiable.
Create your Thumbnail sketches on graph paper. You will need at least 10 with both side and top views of the car. If you are in the trimester exploratory class, you will need to take a picture of your sketches and post them to Google Classroom. Keep the original copy in your bag/folder.
Quizizz "How to Use the Drill Press" lesson. You will need to watch this lesson and complete the quiz questions. You will be using the drill press to make the axle holes in your car. After watching the lesson, you will receive a demonstration in the shop for how to use the drill press. After the demonstration, you will take the quiz.
Once you have received approval for your thumbnail sketches, you will receive a paper on which you will make your rough sketch. The rough sketch must address all design limitations. It is okay for your rough sketch to have a few adjustments to it. This is your last chance to make changes. Your rough sketch must have a completed side view and top view. You will need to get the rough sketch approved. Keep this in your bag/folder.
Watch the Scroll Saw Video. After watching the scroll saw video, you will be given a demonstration in the shop for how to use the scroll saw. Then you will take a QUIZ. You must pass the quiz in order to use the scroll saw - which you will do later.
You will need to do some practice cuts on the scroll saw. Ms. Vogel will give you a piece of scrap wood with some lines on it. You will need to cut ON the lines.
If your rough sketch has been approved, you will need to use it to make your final orthographic drawing. Your orthographic drawing may not have any sketchy or unclear lines. Make your lines smooth and clean, exactly where you want them to be. Get your orthographic drawing approved.
Once you have your orthographic drawing approved, you will cut it out carefully along the lines and tape it to your wooden block. You will trace the outline and cut the side profile with the scroll saw. See the CO2 Car Legacy Project slide deck, slides 7-9 for this.
Before cutting anything, you will need to drill your axle holes using the drill press.
After you have successfully drilled the holes, you will cut out the side profile of the car. Make sure you keep all the scrap pieces and reassemble them into the original block shape. Tape it all together with the outline of the top shape clearly visible so that Ms. Vogel can cut it for you.
Once your car has been cut on both the top and bottom, you are ready to sand. See the CO2 Car Legacy Project slide deck, slide 10.
If your sanding job has received approval, you will need to prime your car's surface with spray primer. This will require that you view the spray painting lesson and receive a demonstration.
Sand your car a second time with 400 grit sand paper after the primer has dried.
Paint your car the desired color.
Once the paint has dried, you will assemble the rest of the parts. See this slide deck. You may need to have your axles cut tot he correct size. See the teacher for this.

Required steps for CO2 Cars Project
View the Legacy Project: CO2 Racing Car and complete "CO2 Racing Car Response Sheet". This is a two-sided, on-page handout.
Complete the EdPuzzle "Dr. Zoon: Dragster Production – Design" in Google Classroom
Receive the dragster design sheet and brainstorm. This is an oversized piece of paper. You will need AT LEAST 10 thumbnail sketches ON THIS SHEET even though there are only spaces pre-printed for four. If you don't remember what a thumbnail sketch is, go back to the slides on the webpage titled CO2 Cars. Each thumbnail idea should show two views of your car: The view from the top and the view from the side. Get your thumbnail sketches approved.
Complete Rough Sketch of final idea on the back of your design sheet. Get APPROVAL of the sketch.
Create your final draft of your design on the FRONT of the dragster design sheet. This is going to be the pattern used to cut your wood blank into the body of your car. Keep in mind that the top and side views must be the exact same length. You need to draw your outline carefully because this is going to be exactly how your wood blank will be cut. Get approval before moving on.
Receive dragster materials and complete the steps required before drilling axle holes (transfer design to wood). If you don't remember these steps GO BACK TO SLIDES 6 AND 7 ABOVE. Get approval of your final design (slide 6) before cutting the pattern out of the paper to avoid mistakes and having to do it over.
Once your final design is approved, you will VERY CAREFULLY cut it out and tape it with a very little bit of masking tape to your wood block before tracing the outline onto your block.
View the Legacy Project "Drill Press" and complete the "Drill Press Response Sheet"
Get checked out on the drill press and drill axle holes.
Get assistance from your teacher for cutting the wood on the band saw.
Sand - get approval before priming.
View legacy project “How to Spray Paint” on my website and complete the handout. The legacy project should be on the CO2 Cars page.
Prime.
Watch the legacy projects that show how to paint stripes and fades (ombres).
Use colored pencils to brainstorm ideas for painting. Create at least 10 color schemes. Choose one and get approval.
Paint dragster.
Assemble dragster according to instructions in slide deck: “CO2 Car Wheel Assembly”
Calculate predicted acceleration (complete handout)
