This week, we took to the streets to challenge ourselves with cameras in our hands. We explored various parts of the cities, primarily the public parks, Harvard, and MIT, looking for intriguing people and fun shots of the city. From a technological standpoint, I learned about my camera, filming, Adobe Premiere Pro, and the DJI mini mics we have been using. I feel far more comfortable with a camera in my hands now than I did a week ago. I have also been improving my social skills in new ways. We have all been taking turns approaching strangers in a friendly manner, asking for their time, and then sitting down with them and having a conversation about the city of Boston. Overall, I have enjoyed what I have been doing. Photography has always been something I wanted to get into, and I’m glad that I have had this opportunity to express that goal. Not only that, but getting adjusted to and exploring the city has been a blast as it is a playground for photography, interesting interviews, and as a future college student who will live near Boston, the experience in the city is extremely helpful. Most things were expected except the microphone malfunctions. Those were certainly a setback, but nothing we couldn’t overcome. We also have to deal with people rejecting our requests for interviews, but that was to be expected. I benefited from this week by gaining confidence in my social interactions with strangers and by also gaining new photography and videography skills. This past week has been focused more on interviews, clips, and photos, but next week our editing will ramp up and things will start to come together. Our first goal was to conduct 5-7 interviews, and we have already exceeded that number. As it turns out, people are more eager to take a minute and have a discussion than you might think. However, not everyone has the most insightful answers for one reason or another, so as of right now, there may only be 5-7 quality interviews. Our second goal is to create a clear narrative arc, and that vision is starting to come together. As we collect b-roll clips and interview, we have been discussing our narrative arc and how we want to tie things together to make a comprehensive and fun documentary. Our last goal is to actually make the 10-minute documentary, and as I said, it will start to come together this week.
