Title: Galaxy Formation and Cosmic Magnetism

Abstract: I will describe recent developments in the theory of galaxy formation and their numerical implementation in cosmological simulations of structure formation. Although traditional models were struggling in reproducing key properties of the present-day galaxy population, recent changes in the small-scale physics of star formation and stellar feedback seem to bring us into the right direction. Exploiting our understanding of the key processes shaping large spiral galaxies, I will then describe recent efforts to model the evolution of cosmic magnetic fields. I will present a new paradigm that can easily explain the property of magnetic fields in nearby and more distant galaxies, based on a turbulent dynamo driven at high redshift by strong galactic outflows.
