Science Strategies from More Than English
Science vocabulary match-up: Create a list of science vocabulary words related to a specific topic, and cut them out. Have students work in pairs or small groups to match the words with their definitions.
Science picture dictation: Provide a picture or diagram related to the science topic, and have students describe it to their partner. The partner then draws what they hear.
Science experiment stations: Set up stations around the classroom with different science experiments related to the topic. Students work in small groups to rotate through each station and conduct the experiments.
Science journaling: Have students keep a science journal, where they write about what they learned in class, record their observations and thoughts, and draw diagrams or pictures to illustrate concepts.
Science project presentations: Have students work in small groups to research and present a science project related to the topic. They can use multimedia tools such as PowerPoint or Google Slides to create their presentations.
Science vocabulary charades: Write science vocabulary words on index cards, and have students act them out without speaking. The other students have to guess what the word is.
Science reading and comprehension: Provide science articles or passages related to the topic, and have students read them and answer comprehension questions or write summaries.
Science debate: Have students debate a scientific topic related to the unit, taking turns presenting arguments and rebuttals.
Science concept map: Have students create a concept map or graphic organizer related to the topic, connecting related concepts and vocabulary words.
Science bingo: Create bingo cards with science vocabulary words related to the topic, and have students mark them off as they hear them during class.
