Math Strategies from More Than English
Math vocabulary match-up: Create a list of math vocabulary words related to the topic, and cut them out. Have students work in pairs or small groups to match the words with their definitions.
Math picture dictation: Provide a picture or diagram related to the math topic, and have students describe it to their partner. The partner then draws what they hear.
Math problem solving stations: Set up stations around the classroom with different math problems related to the topic. Students work in small groups to rotate through each station and solve the problems.
Math journaling: Have students keep a math journal, where they write about what they learned in class, record their solutions and thought processes, and draw diagrams or pictures to illustrate concepts.
Math project presentations: Have students work in small groups to research and present a math project related to the topic. They can use multimedia tools such as PowerPoint or Google Slides to create their presentations.
Math vocabulary charades: Write math vocabulary words on index cards, and have students act them out without speaking. The other students have to guess what the word is.
Math reading and comprehension: Provide math articles or passages related to the topic, and have students read them and answer comprehension questions or write summaries.
Math debate: Have students debate a math topic related to the unit, taking turns presenting arguments and rebuttals.
Math concept map: Have students create a concept map or graphic organizer related to the topic, connecting related concepts and vocabulary words.
Math bingo: Create bingo cards with math problems related to the topic, and have students mark them off as they solve them during class.
