Course Description: 2nd grade students begin the year developing concepts of even and odd numbers and how to collect and represent data that they collect using a variety of graphs. In the first quarter, students also continue developing their understanding of place value by creating “hundreds” from groups of “tens”. In the second quarter, students continue working on learning how to accurately measure using different standard and metric units. They then turn their attention to building fluency with addition and subtraction within 100. In the 3rd quarter, 2nd grade students extend their understanding of addition and subtraction to adding and subtracting within 1,000 and being able to explain their solutions. In the fourth quarter, 2nd grade math students learn how to tell time to the nearest 5 minutes, understand the value of coins and bills, and recognize and draw shapes that have specific attributes involving angles and sides.
