Course Description: In Kindergarten math, students begin the year with a focus on counting and number sense. They learn how to connect the act of counting with quantities being counted as they work to truly understand the meaning of numbers. They then use their understanding of numbers and quantities to begin making comparisons. Students also begin to develop an understanding of place value in kindergarten by creating “tens” from “ones”. In the third and fourth quarters they build on their understanding of numbers and place value to add and subtract. Kindergarten math students also learn about measurement and how to measure accurately, how to identify, describe and create shapes, the value of coins, days of the week and telling time.
