Course Description: 1st grade math students use what they learned in kindergarten to begin the year learning how to accurately add and subtract within 20 and fluently recall addition and subtraction facts within 10. Addition and subtraction are key concepts for 1st graders and they work on these topics throughout the first quarter of the year. In the second quarter they learn about the value of coins and continue working on developing fluency with addition and subtraction. In the third quarter, students work on comparing numbers and continue developing their understanding of place value by bundling “ones” into “tens” and “hundreds”. They then begin working on addition within 100 and adding multiples of 10. In the fourth quarter, 1st grade math students also learn how to measure length and distance, tell time in hours and half-hours, collect and represent data in their environments, and how to define and create two- and three-dimensional shapes.
