Which One Doesn't Belong is a great launch or closure that increases mathematical discourse and justification in your classroom. It allows every student to have a voice and join the conversation regardless of background knowledge. There is a whole website dedicated to this concept for all age ranges.
Students are given 4 images, graphs, or numbers and and the teacher asks, "Which one doesn't belong and why?" Each of the images has a reason for not belonging, so every student has the chance to justify and see other student perspectives. This can also bring out concepts and vocabulary that will be useful when students begin problem solving.
