I came across this strategy of 2 Truths and 1 Lie last year (I think it was from Dan Meyer.) I love how this increases discourse instead of just asking students to solve a problem. The most powerful part is, after doing a few of these in class, you can put up a problem or image and students can create their own statements for the 2 truths and 1 lie (then they can analyze other team’s statements for the lie.) This increases ownership and creates a deeper understanding of a concept. It can also be used as a strong formative assessment. In addition, this strategy works well on a whiteboard rotation where students can read other team statements easily. See below for course specific (by trimester or semester) examples. If you are willing to share, I would love to hear about, or observe this strategy in action!
