Students are guided to read the problem three separate times for three separate purposes, with quick discussions between each read. This MLR helps students think metacognitively about their math problem-solving.
Giving students a purpose to read helps to focus students to identify:
The context of the mathematical situation
Relationships that exist within that context
Strategies that can be used to answer the question using the problem context.Â
Bonus: The additional questions generated can be used as extensions for groups who complete the question.
