The Portuguese language is gaining prominence in the state of Utah. In an interview with Jornal das Comunidades, Luis Camara Manoel, the first Honorary Consul of Portugal in Utah, shared that approximately 5,000 students are learning Portuguese across the state. Among them, 3,250 are enrolled in schools ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade, while the remaining students are pursuing Portuguese studies at some of Utah’s major universities, including Utah Valley University, Brigham Young University, and the University of Utah.
Portuguese has even secured its place as the third most widely spoken language in Utah, following English and Spanish—an achievement largely attributed to the local educational system. It’s a testament to the growing importance of linguistic diversity in the region.
