High-quality Portuguese products are now entering North American markets more frequently. Our crockery, textiles, shoes, pastries, charcuteries, and virgin olive oil are now part of a wide range of high-quality products that we can access to in our local supermarkets.
The promotion of these and other products to distributors and merchants is one of our goals.
We invite all Portuguese in Utah to be part of this effort, that whenever you find these Portuguese products, to please share them with us here, so that we can promote them in this special section of our site, and demonstrate the level of product demand that will keep them on the shelves.
Portuguese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the state of Utah, with recent estimates suggesting close to 10,000 speakers.
An increasing number of school districts already offer Portuguese language programs for primary and secondary school students, and many of our universities promote Portuguese language programs in their curriculum.
One of our main missions is to promote the teaching of the Portuguese language, history, and culture in these schools and universities, so that more and more students learn about Portugal, and seek out our country. To this end, the promotion of scholarships and educational exchanges is a critical component of this effort.
Utah is home to a young and growing Portuguese community, attracted by the excellent universities in our state as well as its growing technology sector. It also has families that have already established a new generation of Portuguese descendants, and are now welcoming a beautiful third generation.
Our families are truly ambassadors of our country and culture. Whether it's a football match, a sublime "sardinhada", or a Christmas Eve dinner, the Portuguese rarely need an excuse to gather around a table with good food.
In addition to our annual consular visits which so many Portuguese welcome, one of our focus projects is the organization of cultural and gastronomic events, to celebrate and promote our friendship, our food, and our culture.
