Luis Câmara Manoel, Honorary Consul of Portugal in Utah
There are roughly 7,500 individuals of Portuguese descent in the state of Utah. We are a fast-growing community, attracted by the quality of Utah's universities, the robust economic growth of the state, and the family-oriented culture so cherished by Portuguese tradition. We are dedicated men and women, leaders in technology, education, philanthropy, among others. Committed to our people, leaders in our communities.
In recognition of our community, and at the request of the Honorable Ambassador of Portugal in Washington D.C., Dr. Francisco Duarte Lopes, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested the U.S. government to establish a consular post in the state of Utah. This post brings our community closer to the services of the Consulate General of Portugal in San Francisco, and aims to serve three distinct purposes:
1. Supporting Portuguese Citizens
To provide consular assistance to the Portuguese community in Utah, we will now hold annual consular visits, which bring to our state the services most frequently sought after at the Consulate General of San Francisco, namely, the renewal of passport and citizen card.
Although Honorary Consulates can support a limited number competences, I will be at your service to support you in your interactions with the Portuguese government. I will try to help you to the best of my ability to answer any questions you may have.
2. Promoting Portuguese Economic Interests
One of the main responsibilities of the Portuguese Honorary Consulate is the promotion of Portugal's economic interests.
We are pleased to see the increasingly growing number of Portuguese products in Utah. Products such as our traditional tableware, textiles, shoes, pastries, sausages, our extra-virgin olive oil and even our beloved bacalhau (salted cod), are now part of a wide range of high quality products that we have access to in local supermarkets.
3. Sharing the Portuguese language and culture
Portuguese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the state of Utah, with recent estimates suggesting approximately 10,000 speakers. An increasing number of school districts have already adopted Portuguese language immersion programs in primary and secondary schools, and several universities promote Portuguese language learning in their curriculum.
Utah is home to a young and growing Portuguese community. It is also home to families, like mine, who have already established a new generation of Portuguese descendants, and are now welcoming a beautiful third generation. Our families are true ambassadors of our country and culture. They are cohesive, compassionate, committed to welcoming all the Portuguese who come to visit, or who decide to stay with us, generously sharing with them, a typical Portuguese meal whenever the occasion allows.
Dear friends, the responsibility for the projects we have outlined here does not fall exclusively upon the Honorary Consul, but upon all of us. The creation of this Honorary Consulate is a shared honor, recognizing our collective contribution to the great state of Utah. I hope, together, we can work to continue to honor the trust placed upon our community
