Old Fashion Love

Size:~ Length: ~ Width: ~ Height:
Artist Statement:This work was inspired by the video of the song “Unconditionally” by Katy Perry. From my point of view, this song makes you feel unconditionally love. It is a great example to show how certain notes, rhythm, words and music as a whole can create an image and spark creativity. The dress has the style of a 1910s party dress tied with similar accessories that are seen throughout the video.

Curatorial Rational

My exhibition explores the theme of music, the feeling it creates and the effect it has on our environment. Initially, my work focused on my personal experiences with this theme, specifically about the way it changes and makes me feel. I later progressed to explore these concepts of what a song may look and feel like.
I feel that the way my artworks are displayed it helps to create a connection between the artwork and the viewer. The movement and colors in the work may contribute to the viewer's personal experiences with music. It may spark a memory when they felt a similar way about music just like what it makes me feel. The electric or peaceful environment that shifts around you.
Upon entering, the first piece that the viewer encounters is The Face of Music. This piece is inspired by the concept that anyone can feel and connect with music. The theory that fetuses can hear music in the last trimester of pregnancy was also an inspiration. The treble clef shaped as an adult face on one side and the baby face on the other, implies that age doesn't matter to connect with music. This work frames the viewers upcoming experience of my remaining exhibition as feeling part of music and it’s magic. The plaster cloth and remaining powdered allowed me to create a soft and smooth finish. It has very little detail creating a welcoming atmosphere for viewers to enter when progressing on to the rest of my works.
The space that was offered to me is perfect for the purpose of my theme. Music can make you feel cozy and connected but also confident and free. The space is not very open but also not too close. The “open” space highlighted Through Me since it was distance from the viewer to create a wider look and desperate reach to connect. The “closed” space made the rest of my works have a deeper connection with the viewer. These all share visual elements that require the viewer to get more intimate. For example, Reminds me of You has small details like the notes on the sheets of music and the windows of buildings. The dripping technique I used for some areas add the rainy feeling to the artwork. The reflection of the street lamps help to achieve the idea of a wet floor and the small semi circles to create puddles. Feeling Alive also has very small elements like people and objects that complement the idea of “everyday life events”. It’s popping color and old finish give it a cozy yet diverse sensation. They therefore work together to evoke the deep human connection with music.
Through Me is the heart of the space, hung on the wall to create space between the viewer. This helps the viewer have a wider view of the artwork. I chose to make this my centerpiece because it effectively mirrors the idea of the human connection with music. To amplify my theme in this work, I created a painting that you can only see one at a time with 3d glasses. The blue side of the glasses will only allow the viewer to see the painting in blue and the red part will only allow the viewer to see the red drawing. This creates the illusion of the violin being part of the skeleton.
There is no clear line for the viewer to follow when viewing my works, as they are all made to make the viewer connect to music. This is aimed to liberate the viewer to explore the new world of music however they like, it’s designed to give them freedom of exploration.
