Identification
Advanced Learner Identification
The Portage Community School District uses multiple criteria, in accordance with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, to identify highly capable students in five areas (General Intellectual, Specific Academic, Leadership, Creativity, and Visual Arts). Multiple criteria used for identification of advanced learners may include standardized test scores, individualized testing, district assessments, nominations, rating scales, exceptional performances, portfolios, consistent quality of products, and/or a student’s intense interest in a subject.
Rating Scales, Nominations, and Acceleration Forms
The rating scales below are based on the five categories recognized by the state for Advanced Learners. They were created to serve as one data point when considering students for Advanced Learner events and identification. The forms below should be used by teachers and parents as part of the nomination process. Note that there is a rating for Young Learners which would be appropriate to fill out for students PK-2. Some students are Twice Exceptional; children who exhibit advanced capabilities yet may have learning difficulties. Please fill out the rating scale that indicates their area of strength.
