Q: How long is fieldwork?
A: Level 1 fieldwork occurs in the students' 3rd out of 5 semesters and each is 1 week long for 40 hours. There are two total Level 1 Fieldwork experiences.
Level 2 fieldwork occurs in semester 5 and each is 8 weeks long and 320 hours. There are two total Level 2 Fieldwork experiences. These occur in different settings to give the student a variety of experience.
Q: When can I expect to meet with the AFWC?
A: For any new sites, the AFWC will complete a site visit and meet with the fieldwork educator prior to the start of fieldwork. Once fieldwork has started, the AFWC is available to meet as needed if questions or challenges arise. The AFWC will also meet with the fieldwork educator and student after the midterm evaluation has been completed. This may occur on-site or virtually.
Q: If I want to explore having students at my facility, what are the first steps?
A: Reach out to Caroline at denverotafieldwork@pmi.edu. We will explore options, answer any questions, and get a contract completed.
Q: I have never supervised a student before, are there requirements or certifications I need?
A: For Level 1: A professional license in Colorado is all that is needed, you do not need to be an occupational therapy professional.
For Level 2: An OTA or OT license in Colorado and a year of experience in your current practice setting. You do not need any teaching experience or additional training to provide a great educational experience for a student. The AFWC will work with you to make sure you are comfortable with the objectives that will guide the process, and guide you through any challenges that arise. The best way to learn is by doing, so if you are curious, go for it!
Q: How do I know how much supervision is needed, or how quickly to progress a student?
A: You can find some specific supervision information and resources here. You will work with the AFWC to establish a weekly guide that will help you know if you are on track. Every site is different. Some students begin treating the fieldwork educator's caseload on the first day. Some students will need a little more observation and closer support. The expectation is that by the end of 8 weeks the student is functiong as an entry level practitioner and is treating the FWE's full caseload.
