Separation Among First Time Parents: Determining Outcomes as a Result of Division of Labor

Abstract

Many couples decide to terminate their relationship after the transition to parenthood. This study examined how division of labor incites separation among first-time parents. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 10 first-time parents who cohabited with their ex-partner. My findings reveal that a tumultuous relationship prior to the birth of a child enhances feelings of resentment that parents may feel towards one another after adopting new found responsibilities associated with the transition to parenthood and when workloads are not evenly distributed, couples decide to resort to separation. I also found that this sentiment was similar even in relationships that were deemed stable. My research illustrates how division of labor creates inequality and the consequences that come along with it.
