Not Just a Game: Gamer Guilds and Family Dynamics

Abstract: Under what conditions is guild membership a factor in influencing social communication among familial units? Using unique Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) guilds and family dynamics survey data I sought to discover gamer attitudes towards guilds, parental figures, and siblings. Existing research on the importance of MMORPG's among gamers, the positive and negative effects of gaming, and the impact gaming has on family cohesion have greatly structured the ways gamers respond to their familial units and their guilds. To understand the attitudes of MMORPG guild players, I investigate if there is an association between guild membership and familial units across various variables. Using chi-square and t-test analysis I found that to some extent there is an association between guild commitment and social interaction with familial contacts. This suggests but does not prove an association between the two realms because the findings move in various directions. In particular, an association was seen between guild membership and family across communication satisfaction, levels of trust, and feelings of getting upset. But, there was no association between guild membership and family when relying on guilds and/or family once problems arose. My findings suggest that gamers exhibit distinctive ways of how they socially and emotionally interact with their family and MMORPG guild. This paper contributes to the theoretical and empirical knowledge about MMORPG gamers and their social interaction levels among guilds, parents, and siblings.

Why Sociology?

Sociology is simply the greatest of all time! There are no words to describe the wonderful time I had a PLU...but if I could sum it up in a couple of sentences, I would definitely choose to include my experience as a sociology student. Joining the sociology discipline is something that you will NEVER forget. I love sociology for changing the way I view the world and navigate life.
